George is in New York today to officially start his new role for the U.N.

SPOTTED: The handsome GEORGE CLOONEY takes on his duties as the United Nations Messenger of Peace, speaking at a press conference at the U.N. headquarters Thursday in New York.

As a “Messenger,” Clooney will be responsible for promoting the U.N.’s worldwide humanitarian activities. The 46-year-old star is no stranger to such work, having — along with ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’ pals MATT DAMON and BRAD PITT — strived to raise awareness about the war plaguing Darfur, an unstable region in western Sudan.

As BRITNEY SPEARS undergoes evaluation at the UCLA Medical Center, ROSIE O’DONNELL is using her blog to talk about how the embattled pop star and her family could never have foreseen her future troubles when she first became famous.

She writes, in part: "They could not have known at the start that this would be the result. It is sold as the answer," while adding, "she wanted it, the mothers always said, as way of both apology and explanation."

Rosie also expresses her desire to help Britney: "If I had a magic wand, I would will her the strength, Windex all windows, watch the sun warm her soul."

But there’s been speculation the troubled pop star may even be in the hospital for a full two weeks. “The way it works is a law enforcement agency or mental health professional can conclude that someone is a danger to self or others, and undertake an involuntary commitment,” ALLAN PARACHINI, L.A. Superior Court spokesperson told the Associated Press. “To extend that for another 14 days there has to be a court hearing. That’s typically held in the hospital where the patient is.”

The 66-year-old Christie won a Screen Actors Guild Award last Sunday for her portrayal of a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s in the film ‘Away from Her’ — a role that recently garnered her a fourth Oscar nomination.

Britney is now on a psychiatric hold at UCLA Medical Center.

According to the Los Angeles Times, it was a phone call to authorities from BRITNEY SPEARS‘ psychiatrist which led to her hospitalization in the psychiatric unit of UCLA Medical Center early this morning. The Times reports that Britney’s admittance was actually a carefully planned event that had been orchestrated over time.

A motorcade of more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles, including police helicopters, followed an ambulanced Spears as she was admitted to the hospital shortly after one in the morning.

She has been placed on a 5150, which is a 72-hour hold, as she is evaluated and treated.

In another dramatic evening, Britney is taken to the hospital and placed on a psychiatric hold.

Hollywood.tv cameras were there as BRITNEY SPEARS was escorted by an entourage of police to UCLA Medical Center’s psychiatric unit.

The drama began Wednesday when, sources tell ET, Britney was seen driving erratically and at unsafe speeds.

The police first arrived to her Los Angeles home shortly after midnight, with an eventual motorcade taking the singer to the hospital. Britney’s mother LYNNE SPEARS, her dad JAMIE, SAM LUTFI, friend ALLI SIMS and paparazzi love interest ADNAN GHALIB were all seen at the hospital early this morning.
